Palm Strings shared this joyous celebration with Rike, a most charming and talented saxophonist from Johannesburg.
Great fun was had playing together for the arrival drinks, then Rike played for starters, Titia and Michael for mains, and then a special song they learned for the cutting of the cake, followed by “Happy Birthday” after which Mike and Titia continued till after midnight.
Having started at 5.30pm the team were a touch tired! It was a great day!
Palm Strings played at a beautiful wedding venue on the 19th of December 2018 – Die Woud, Caledon. A wonderful experience of a wedding in a natural forest.
Of course, playing outdoors always has its challenges. The battery powered amp came in handy so all heard the minister as well as the music.
Palm Strings recently played for a wonderful wedding at La Residence. It was a smallish wedding of about 21 guests and the bride is a personal friend of Barrack Obama!
The bride wanted to sing herself down the aisle. Mike went to her hotel to rehearse with her in secret because this was a surprise for her groom.
The wedding organizer on the day gave Titia and Mike up-to-the-second instructions of walking in, which they always try to resist because it never happens according to plan. Well, this one, of course, couldn’t! The bride was so very emotional that she didn’t start singing for the longest time so the duo had to wing a long introduction until she was ready – definitely one for experienced professionals only!
But that isn’t all. There were FOUR sound engineers flown from Johannesburg with all their equipment – which malfunctioned ( due to a power issue) as soon as the minister opened his mouth!
It was a beautiful day in the end. All went well but it was one where Palm Strings felt they had to work for their money and really deserved to put their feet up afterwards!
The venue for this wedding was NEO wine farm in Wellington on the 12th February this year – an exquisite setting at the foot of the Bainskloof pass.
For this particular wedding, the groom had a playlist for us of Blink 182 – for one hour! Apart from a gig where Palm Strings learned a string (no pun intended) of Bollywood songs, they haven’t ever spent so much time preparing for one wedding. Palm Strings was the ‘warm-up band’ so to speak, playing on the stoep for the arrival of the guests, setting the tone for the afternoon. It was incredibly windy, as it always is when music has to be used!
Fred Eckley and Sue married at the Kalk Bay Anglican Church with their reception at the Casa Labia, Muizenberg, on the 12th January 2018.
It turned out to be a perfect day.
If you put in the hours of preparation, nothing phases you!
Another picture-perfect evening at Dutchies where Palm Strings could do what they love!
Joke, the owner of Dutchies on Grotto Beach, Hermanus, has a jazz night once a month and the restaurant was fully booked so Palm Strings played on a stage outside!
The weather was perfect, the guests all loved the music and as for the food…. Sometimes Palm Strings has to be reminded that this is called work.
Another beautiful wedding at the 12 Apostles Hotel.
Fiona & Alistair tied the knot with friends and family in attendance. It was a splendid wedding!
Palm Strings played at a wonderful wedding at Rickety Bridge winery in Franschoek. This is what the happy couple had to say:
Hi Titia, we just wanted to thank you for playing at our wedding yesterday at Rickety Bridge, everyone absolutely loved you guys and we had loads of comments on how great you both are and what an extensive repertoire you have. Sorry I couldn’t speak to you we got taken into the the vines for lots of photos. Once again many thanks, Andy and Beth
Every Monday morning sees Palm Strings Duo at no. 1 Adderley street, entertaining the guests who are departing on the luxury Rovos Rail.
It does happen, from time to time, that a wheel comes off….quite literally….and that this normally one and a half hour gig turns into a two-hour epic.
Couple that with a three-hour play for various CEO’s from the “mining indaba ” at the Mt Nelson Hotel and you have two tired musicians who feel nevertheless invincible!
