About the Programme

The Bishops and Masi Outreach Program has premises at Masicorp, where local school going children from the age of nine are taught how to play violin in group classes. The philosophy behind this program is best summed up in the words of Shinichi Suzuki: “If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.” Titia Blake (with kind assistance of volunteers) runs this program and teaches the children literature she herself uses in performance. She arranges all the music for ensembles in three and four voices.

In collaboration with Maria Botha from Muzukids, three of the older students are now in a programme where they are learning how to teach so that they, too, can pass on the gift of music.

December 2019 saw yet another collaboration begin, where three of the students were busking at Constantia Village Shopping Centre to raise funds for their own studies as well as the Headstart Music Trust, a new initiative being formed by Bruce Jack in memory of his mother (and Palm Strings mentor) Elspeth Jack. This is intended to be ongoing.

The program is funded by Bishops as well as numerous individuals who hear the children play and decide to be a part of this initiative.
